English title:	Development of anticorrosion coatings to work under liquid metal environments
Spanish title:	Desarrollo de recubrimientos para prevenir la corrosi�n por metal l�quido
English abstract:	Many challenging scientific and commercial applications such as nuclear fusion [1,2] and fission reactors (Generation IV) [3], concentrated solar power [4], and to a lesser extent microelectronic devices require cooling of high power dissipation densities. The cooling needs of such applications are beyond what can be offered by traditional coolants. On this frame, liquid metals emerge as alternative coolants because they have a large efficiency to extract heat, high boiling point, are able to work under harsh environments, and are silent and vibration-free. However, liquid metals have the drawback that serious corrosion may occur when they are in direct contact with conventional structural stainless steel and other metal alloys. One affordable and easy way to overcome this corrosion problem is to cover the steel substrate with a corrosion-resistant coating. Such a solution would improve the corrosion behavior of the system (coating/ steel) while keeping the structural properties and low cost of the steel. In this talk, we will present the optimization procedure to fabricate SiC coatings by sputtering which are dense, amorphous, pinhole-free, and well adhered to the substrate. Special attention will be paid to the influence of the deposition conditions (substrate temperature) and cleaning of the substrate on the adhesion of the coating to the steel substrate since the lack of adhesion would hamper any possible industrial applications. Spanish abstract:	Muchas aplicaciones cient�ficas y comerciales, como los reactores de fusi�n [1,2] y fisi�n (Generaci�n IV) [3] nuclear, la energ�a solar de concentraci�n [4], y en menor grado algunos dispositivos microelectr�nicos, requieren enfriar altas densidades de potencia. Las necesidades de enfriamiento de tales aplicaciones van m�s all� de lo que pueden ofrecer los refrigerantes tradicionales. En este marco, los metales l�quidos emergen como refrigerantes alternativos puesto que ellos poseen una gran eficiencia para extraer calor y un alto punto de ebullici�n. Adem�s, pueden trabajar en ambientes hostiles, son silenciosos y carecen de vibraciones. Sin embargo, los metales l�quidos tienen el inconveniente de que son altamente corrosivos, lo que produce efectos adversos en el acero cuando se encuentran en contacto directo con �l. Una forma asequible de superar este problema de corrosi�n es cubrir el sustrato de acero con un recubrimiento resistente a la corrosi�n. Esta soluci�n mejora el comportamiento frente a la corrosi�n del sistema (recubrimiento/acero) manteniendo las propiedades estructurales y el bajo coste de este �ltimo. En esta charla, presentaremos el procedimiento de optimizaci�n para fabricar recubrimientos de SiC por pulverizaci�n cat�dica. Se describir�n las condiciones de dep�sito necesarias para obtener recubrimientos densos, amorfos, sin poros y bien adheridos al sustrato. Se prestar� especial atenci�n a la influencia de la temperatura del sustrato y su limpieza sobre la adhesi�n del revestimiento al sustrato de acero, ya que sin una buena adhesi�n cualquier posible aplicaci�n industrial es inviable.
