English title:	Using laser irradiation to produce hollow nanoparticles

English abstract:	Metallic hollow nanoparticles exhibit interesting optical properties that can be controlled by geometrical parameters. Moreover, irradiation with laser pulses has emerged recently as a valuable tool for reshaping and size modification of plasmonic metal nanoparticles, thereby enabling the synthesis of nanostructures with unique morphologies. In this work, we demonstrate how we can use the irradiation with laser pulses to fabricate hollow nanoparticles. First, we use classical molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the solid-to-hollow conversion of gold nanoparticles upon femtosecond laser irradiation. Here, we suggest an efficient method to produce hollow nanoparticles under certain specific conditions. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the irradiation of spherical nanoparticles with nanosecond laser pulses induces shape transformations yielding nanocrystals with an inner cavity. The concentration of the stabilizing surfactant, the use of moderate pulse fluences, and the size of the irradiated particles determine the efficiency of the process and the nature of the void. Hollow nanocrystals are obtained when molecules from the surrounding medium (e.g., water and organic matter derived from the surfactant) are trapped during laser pulse irradiation. These experimental observations suggest the existence of a subtle balance between the heating and cooling processes experienced by the nanocrystals, which induce their expansion and subsequent recrystallization keeping exogenous matter inside. Therefore, we advance the experimental conditions to efficiently produce hollow nanoparticles, opening a broad range of possibilities for applications in key areas, such as gas and liquid storage and catalysis.
Spanish abstract:	Las nanopart�culas met�licas huecas poseen propiedades �pticas interesantes que pueden controlarse mediante los par�metros geom�tricos. Adem�s, la irradiaci�n con pulsos l�ser ha surgido recientemente como una herramienta valiosa para remodelar y modificar el tama�o de nanopart�culas met�licas plasm�nicas, permitiendo la s�ntesis de nanoestructuras con morfolog�as �nicas. En este trabajo, demostramos c�mo se puede utilizar la irradiaci�n con pulsos l�ser para fabricar nanopart�culas huecas. En primer lugar, utilizamos simulaciones cl�sicas de din�mica molecular para investigar la conversi�n de s�lido a hueco de nanopart�culas de oro tras la irradiaci�n con l�ser de femtosegundos. Aqu�, sugerimos un m�todo eficiente para producir nanopart�culas huecas bajo ciertas condiciones espec�ficas. Adem�s, tambi�n demostramos que la irradiaci�n de nanopart�culas esf�ricas con pulsos l�ser de nanosegundos induce transformaciones de forma, produciendo part�culas con una cavidad interna. La concentraci�n del surfactante estabilizador, el uso de fluencias de pulso moderadas y el tama�o de las part�culas irradiadas determinan la eficiencia del proceso y la naturaleza del vac�o. Las nanopart�culas huecas se obtienen cuando las mol�culas del medio circundante (por ejemplo, agua y materia org�nica derivada del surfactante) quedan atrapadas durante la irradiaci�n con los pulsos l�ser. Estas observaciones experimentales sugieren la existencia de un sutil equilibrio entre los procesos de calentamiento y enfriamiento que experimentan los nanocristales, que inducen su expansi�n y posterior recristalizaci�n manteniendo en su interior materia ex�gena. Por lo tanto, predecimos las condiciones experimentales para producir de manera eficiente nanopart�culas huecas, abriendo un amplio abanico de posibilidades para aplicaciones en �reas clave, como el almacenamiento y la cat�lisis de gases y l�quidos.
