English title:	Rice husk as a sustainable source for the synthesis of graphene oxide
Spanish title:	Cascarilla de arroz como fuente sustentable para la s�ntesis de �xido de grafeno
English abstract:	The purpose of this work was to synthesize graphene oxide from CA, in turn optimizing the variables temperature and time, to maximize the yield and quality of the carbon. Methods: Rice husks from the region were collected, washed with water, and subsequently dried at 60 �C for 24 h. Then, an experimental design was carried out to find both the temperature and the optimal heating time of the CA in the oven, in which approximately 20 g of CA were weighed and heated in a muffle at different temperatures (300, 400, and 500 �C) and times (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 h). Once the different tests were carried out, each one of the samples was weighed to calculate the yield percentage (%R) of the graphite obtained. The samples that presented a %R equal to or greater than 50 % were macerated and sieved in a 160 �m sieve to then characterize the obtained graphite by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Finally, the results were statistically analyzed with the Minitab v.19.1 software to set the optimum values for temperature and time. Now, with the graphite obtained, graphene oxide was synthesized using the modified Hummers method, using sodium nitrate (NaNO3), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and potassium permanganate (KMnO4) as the main reagents of the process. Finally, graphene oxide was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results and discussion: The optimization indicated that the best performance and quality of the graphite is obtained at a temperature of 300 �C for 0.5 h, since as the temperature and time increase, there is a greater mass loss due to thermal decomposition. Likewise, the internal part of the husk experiences a higher temperature compared to other parts of it, preventing the organic component from being completely calcined. At the lowest temperatures and times, darker shades were observed, that is, it is richer in carbon. However, as the temperature and time increased, a white hue was observed due to the presence of ash, indicating the increase of silica in the sample. The FTIR spectrum showed a characteristic peak between 1100 and 1000 cm-1 corresponding to the vibration of the Si-O-Si bonds, confirming that CA ash was obtained. Regarding the synthesis of graphene oxide, the added KMnO4 reacted with H2SO4 forming Mn2O7, which is a highly selective oxidizing agent on double-bonded aromatic compounds, and which has important implications in the structure of graphite and in the mechanisms reaction during oxidation and obtaining graphene oxide. For the characterization of the latter, IR spectroscopy was used, which evidenced the presence of functional groups associated with graphene oxide. Conclusions: The parameters that determine the characteristics of the carbonaceous material in the combustion of AC are temperature and time, obtaining the maximum performance and quality at 300 �C and 0.5 h. Therefore, it was possible to obtain graphene oxide from rice husk residues using the modified Hummers method. Spanish abstract:	El prop�sito de este trabajo fue sintetizar �xido de grafeno a partir de CA, optimizando a su vez las variables temperatura y tiempo, para maximizar el rendimiento y la calidad del carb�n. M�todos: Primeramente, se recolectaron cascarillas de arroz provenientes de la regi�n, se lavaron con agua y posteriormente fueron secadas a 60 �C por 24 h. Luego, se realiz� un dise�o experimental con el fin de encontrar tanto la temperatura como el tiempo �ptimo del calentamiento de la CA en la mufla, para ello se pesaron 20 g aproximadamente de CA y fueron sometidos a calentamiento en una mufla a diferentes temperaturas (300, 400 y 500 �C) y tiempos (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 y 3.0 h). Una vez realizado los diferentes ensayos, se pesaron cada una de las muestras para calcular el porcentaje de rendimiento (%R) del grafito obtenido. Las muestras que presentaron un %R mayor o igual al 50 % fueron maceradas y, tamizadas en un tamiz de 160 �m para luego caracterizar por espectroscop�a infrarroja con transformada de Fourier (FTIR) el grafito obtenido. Finalmente, los resultados fueron analizados estad�sticamente con el software Minitab v.19.1. para establecer los valores �ptimos de temperatura y tiempo. Ahora, con el grafito obtenido se sintetiz� el �xido de grafeno utilizando el m�todo de Hummers modificado, empleando nitrato de sodio (NaNO3), �cido sulf�rico (H2SO4) y permanganato de potasio (KMnO4) como principales reactivos del proceso. Por �ltimo, el �xido de grafeno fue caracterizado por espectroscop�a infrarroja con transformada de Fourier. Resultados y discusi�n: La optimizaci�n indic� que el mejor rendimiento y calidad del grafito se obtiene a una temperatura de 300 �C por 0.5 h, ya que a medida que aumenta la temperatura y tiempo, hay mayor p�rdida de masa producto de la descomposici�n t�rmica. As� mismo, la parte interna de la cascarilla experimenta una temperatura m�s alta en comparaci�n con otros puntos de la misma, evitando que el componente org�nico se calcine completamente. A las temperaturas y tiempos m�s bajos, se observaron tonalidades m�s oscuras, es decir, es m�s rica en carbono. Sin embargo, conforme se aument� la temperatura y el tiempo, se observ� una tonalidad blanca debido a la presencia de ceniza, indicando el incremento de s�lice en la muestra. El espectro FTIR mostr� un pico caracter�stico entre 1100 y1000 cm-1 correspondiente a la vibraci�n de los enlaces Si-O-Si, confirmando que se obtuvo ceniza de CA. En cuanto a la s�ntesis del �xido de grafeno, el KMnO4 adicionado, reaccion� con el H2SO4 formando Mn2O7, el cual es un agente oxidante muy selectivo sobre compuestos arom�ticos de doble enlace, y que tiene importantes implicaciones en la estructura del grafito y en los mecanismos de reacci�n durante la oxidaci�n y obtenci�n del �xido de grafeno. Para la caracterizaci�n de este �ltimo, se utiliz� espectroscop�a IR, la cual evidenci� la presencia de grupos funcionales asociados al �xido de grafeno. Conclusiones: Los par�metros que determinan las caracter�sticas del material carbonoso en la combusti�n de la CA son la temperatura y el tiempo, obteni�ndose el m�ximo rendimiento y calidad a 300 �C y 0.5 h. Por otra parte, fue posible obtener �xido de grafeno a partir de residuos de cascarilla de arroz mediante el m�todo de Hummers modificado.
