English title:	Adsorption of mercury species on the T-MnO2 monolayer: A first-principles study
Spanish title:	Adsorci�n de especies de mercurio sobre la monocapa T-MnO2: Un estudio de primeros principios
English abstract:	This research pertains to a study of the adsorption of mercury species 〖Hg〗^0, HgCl and 〖HgCl〗_2 on the surface of the 〖T-MnO〗_2 monolayer. The calculations are based on the density-functional theory (DFT) within the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE) with the plane-wave pseudopotential method. The periodic slab scheme is used to model the 〖T-MnO〗_2 monolayer. The study of the most favorable adsorption model considers the special sites TM (located just above a Mn atom), TO1 (located just above an O atom in the lower plane) and 〖TO〗_2 (located just above an O atom in the upper plane). Regarding the adsorption of elemental mercury 〖Hg〗^0, it is concluded that the most favorable structure in terms of energy is the 〖Hg〗^0-〖TO〗_1 model, also known as the 〖Hg〗^0 ad-atom model located at the 〖TO〗_1 site with an adsorption energy of -0.36 eV. The most favorable models for HgCl and 〖HgCl〗_2 in terms of energy are the HgCl-TM ad-molecule (with Hg models facing downwards or closer to the surface than the Cl atom) and the 〖HgCl〗_2-TM (with the 〖HgCl〗_2 molecule parallel to the surface and the Hg atom located just above the TM site), with adsorption energies of 1.84 eV and -0.49 eV, respectively. It is concluded that the 〖T-MnO〗_2 monolayer could serve as a component of a device that captures mercury species. Lastly, some dissociation scenarios are explored for HgCl and 〖HgCl〗_2.
Spanish abstract:	En este trabajo, se hace un estudio de la adsorci�n de especies de mercurio 〖Hg〗^0, HgCl y 〖HgCl〗_2 sobre la superficie de la monocapa T-MnO2. Los c�lculos se realizan usando la Teor�a Funcional de Densidad (DFT) dentro de la aproximaci�n de gradiente generalizado de Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE) con seudopotenciales ultrasuaves y una base de ondas planas. Para modelar la monocapa T-MnO2, se usa el esquema del slab peri�dico. Para estudiar el modelo de adsorci�n m�s favorable, se consideran los sitios especiales TM (ubicado justo encima de un �tomo Mn), TO1 (ubicado justo encima de un �tomo de O, perteneciente al plano inferior) y TO2 (ubicado justo encima de un �tomo de O, perteneciente al plano superior). Para la adsorci�n de mercurio elemental se encuentra que la estructura energ�ticamente m�s favorable corresponde al modelo 〖Hg〗^0-TO1 o modelo ad-�tomo de 〖Hg〗^0 localizado en el sitio TO1, con una energ�a de adsorci�n de -0.36 eV, mientras que los modelos energ�ticamente m�s favorables para la adsorci�n de HgCl y 〖HgCl〗_2 corresponden a los modelos ad-mol�cula de HgCl-TM (con el �tomo Hg hacia abajo o m�s cercano a la superficie que el �tomo de Cl) y 〖HgCl〗_2-TM (con la mol�cula 〖HgCl〗_2 paralela a la superficie y �tomo de Hg ubicado justo encima de sitio TM), con valores de las energ�as de adsorci�n de -1.84 y -0.49eV, respectivamente. De estos resultados, se pude establece que la monocapa T-MnO2 se podr�a utilizar como componente de un dispositivo para la captura de especies de mercurio. Finalmente, se exploran algunos escenarios de disociaci�n de las mol�culas HgCl y 〖HgCl〗_2.
