English title:	STUDY OF SILICON OXIDE NANOFLUIDS ON THE STABILITY OF CRUDE OIL/WATER EMULSIONS BY TURBISCAN TECHNIQUE
Spanish title:	ESTUDIO DE NANOFLUIDOS DE �XIDO DE SILICIO EN LA ESTABILIDAD DE EMULSIONES CRUDO/AGUA MEDIANTE LA T�CNICA DE TURBISCAN
English abstract:	Emulsions are mixtures of two immiscible liquids, such as water and crude oil, which are formed during the surfactant and nanofluid flooding process and can affect both the quality and value of the crude oil. Therefore, it is important to study the crude oil/water ratio in an emulsion to determine the amount of water present in the crude il and its stability with respect to time, as it may be necessary to use more chemicals or more advanced separation techniques to control the emulsion. Considering the above, the effect of silicon oxide (SiO2) nanofluids on the stability of emulsions generated by the action of surfactant/nanoparticle formulations in a 16 �API Colombian heavy crude oil was evaluated using the Turbiscan technique. This technique analyzes the evolution of emulsion stability over time by measuring the intensity of light scattering in the sample. The results obtained showed that the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles reduced the Turbiscan stability index (TSI) to values below 15 after 12 hours of testing, indicating further stabilization of the emulsions. This is due to the high surface energy, steric effect and electrostatic effect generated by the nanoparticles at the crude oil/water interface, preventing flocculation and coalescence phenomena of the crude oil droplets, which leads to separation between the water and crude oil phases. The importance of this study within the petroleum industry lies in the need to improve the efficiency of crude oil production, so the addition of silicon oxide nanofluids may be a promising solution to improve the stability of emulsions and, therefore, increase the efficiency and profitability of crude oil production. In addition, the Turbiscan analytical technique is a novel and valuable tool to evaluate the stability of crude oil/water emulsions and thus, study the effectiveness of these additives used in improving the stability of these emulsions.
Spanish abstract:	Las emulsiones son mezclas de dos l�quidos inmiscibles, como el agua y el petr�leo, las cuales son formadas durante el proceso de inyecci�n de surfactantes y nanofluidos, pudiendo afectar tanto la calidad como el valor del crudo. Por lo tanto, es importante estudiar la proporci�n crudo/agua en una emulsi�n para determinar la cantidad de agua presente en el petr�leo y su estabilidad con respecto al tiempo, ya que puede ser necesario utilizar m�s productos qu�micos o t�cnicas de separaci�n m�s avanzadas para controlar la emulsi�n. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, se evalu� el efecto de nanofluidos de �xido de silicio (SiO2) en la estabilidad de las emulsiones generadas por la acci�n de formulaciones surfactante/nanopart�culas en un crudo pesado colombiano de 16 �API mediante la t�cnica del Turbiscan. Esta t�cnica analiza la evoluci�n de la estabilidad de la emulsi�n a lo largo del tiempo, midiendo la intensidad de la dispersi�n de la luz en la muestra. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que la presencia de nanopart�culas de SiO2 redujeron el �ndice de estabilidad del Turbiscan (TSI) a valores inferiores a 15 despu�s de 12 horas de prueba, lo que indica una mayor estabilizaci�n de las emulsiones. Esto se debe a la alta energ�a superficial, al efecto est�rico y al efecto electrost�tico generado por las nanopart�culas en la interfase crudo/agua, impidiendo los fen�menos de floculaci�n y coalescencia de las gotas de crudo, que conlleva a la separaci�n entre las fases agua y crudo. La importancia de este estudio dentro de la industria petrolera radica en la necesidad de mejorar la eficiencia de la producci�n de petr�leo, por lo que la adici�n de nanofluidos de �xido de silicio puede ser una soluci�n prometedora para mejorar la estabilidad de las emulsiones y, por lo tanto, incrementar la eficiencia y rentabilidad de la producci�n de petr�leo. Adem�s, la t�cnica anal�tica del Turbiscan es una herramienta novedosa y valiosa para evaluar la estabilidad de emulsiones crudo/agua y as�, estudiar la eficacia de estos aditivos empleados en el mejoramiento de la estabilidad de estas emulsiones.
