English title:	APPLICATION OF LIQUID POLYSTYRENE PRODUCTS AS A VISCOSITY REDUCER FOR HEAVY COLOMBIAN CRUDE OILS
Spanish title:	APLICACI�N DE PRODUCTOS LIQUIDOS DE POLIESTIRENO COMO REDUCTOR DE LA VISCOSIDAD DE CRUDOS PESADOS COLOMBIANOS
English abstract:	Heavy and extra-heavy crude oils are of great interest to the petroleum industry, since they are the most abundant fossil fuels at present in comparison with the production of light crude oils. Therefore, due to the difficult process of extraction and transportation of these crude oils, the petroleum industry has seen the need to develop new studies and technologies that facilitate extraction and, at the same time, reduce operating costs. On the other hand, the increase of plastic waste such as polystyrene has been affecting ecosystems, so there is a need to find a solution, and one of them is the transformation into liquid products through the pyrolysis process. In this research, low density expanded polystyrene (LDPE) was subjected to thermal cracking conditions at 430 �C, 400 psi in a nitrogen atmosphere for 40 minutes of reaction. Then, the polystyrene liquid products were applied as a viscosity reducing agent in 3 Colombian heavy crude oils, which presented viscosities in the range of 500 to 16000 cp (@ 30 �C). Meanwhile, the addition of polystyrene liquids with dosages between 0.5 to 7 % in volume, allowed viscosity reductions in the range of 3 to 65 %. However, the results showed greater viscosity reductions in the heavier crude oils. Characterization of the liquid products by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) indicated that the polystyrene was transformed into simple aromatic structures with short alkyl chains. This indicates that the dosage of these simple aromatic structures has favorable interactions with the heavy crude oil constituents. Therefore, the thermal treatment of expanded polystyrene and the application of its liquid products are an alternative for the permanent improvement of the properties of heavy crude oils.
Spanish abstract:	Los crudos pesados y extrapesados son de gran inter�s para la industria petrolera, puesto que son las energ�as f�siles con mayor abundancia en la actualidad en comparaci�n con la producci�n de los crudos livianos. Por tanto, debido al dif�cil proceso de extracci�n y transporte de estos crudos, la industria del petr�leo ha visto la necesidad de desarrollar nuevos estudios y tecnolog�as que faciliten la extracci�n y al mismo tiempo, reduzcan los costos operativos. Por otra parte, el incremento de los residuos pl�sticos como el poliestireno ha venido afectando los ecosistemas, por lo que existe la necesidad de buscar una soluci�n, y una de ellas es la transformaci�n hacia productos l�quidos mediante el proceso de pirolisis. En esta investigaci�n el poliestireno expandido de baja densidad (LDPE) se someti� a condiciones de craqueo t�rmico a 430 �C, 400 psi en atmosfera con nitr�geno durante 40 minutos de reacci�n. Luego, los productos l�quidos del poliestireno fueron aplicados como agente reductor de viscosidad en 3 crudos pesados colombianos, los cuales presentaron viscosidades en el intervalo de 500 a 16000 cP (@ 30 �C). Entre tanto la adici�n de los l�quidos de poliestireno con dosificaciones entre 0.5 a 7 % en volumen, permiti� reducciones de viscosidad en el intervalo de 3 a 65 %. Sin embargo, los resultados mostraron mayores reducciones de viscosidad en los crudos m�s pesados. La caracterizaci�n de los productos l�quidos mediante espectroscopia de infrarrojo (FTIR-ATR) indican que el poliestireno se transform� en estructuras arom�ticas simples con cadenas alqu�licas cortas. Lo anterior indica que la dosificaci�n de estas estructuras arom�ticas simples presenta interacciones favorables con los constituyentes de los crudos pesados. Por tanto, el tratamiento t�rmico del poliestireno expandido y la aplicaci�n de sus productos l�quidos son una alternativa para el mejoramiento permanente de las propiedades de los crudos pesados.
