English title:	Substitution of traditional materials with organic reinforcement composites

English abstract:	Currently, environmental sustainability has become one of the biggest global challenges. The production of goods and services has historically been associated with the generation of polluting emissions, waste, and other negative environmental impacts. In order to reverse this trend, multiple solutions have been proposed, including the implementation of composite materials made from recycled and organic materials. Composite materials are formed from a matrix with certain mechanical properties and a reinforcement with different properties that complement the behavior of the developed piece. These materials offer a series of advantages over conventional materials, such as greater strength, durability, lightness, and the possibility of adapting to different designs and shapes. However, they also presented some challenges in their implementation, such as the appropriate selection of the materials that would compose the composite, the optimization of its design, and the evaluation of its environmental impact. In this context, a research project was carried out that aimed to substitute conventional materials to improve employability in the manufacture of parts with composite materials. The project focused on the characterization and improvement of the strength and stiffness properties of a bicycle part, by selecting different natural fiber reinforcements and epoxy matrix. Three types of natural fibers were selected to be used as reinforcement: palm fiber, sugarcane fiber, and powdered lignin. These fibers were chosen for their high strength and stiffness, as well as for their renewable and biodegradable origin. The mechanical properties of the epoxy matrix composites reinforced with these fibers were compared with those of the conventional materials used in the manufacture of bicycle parts. To carry out the comparison, the bicycle part was modeled using SolidWorks software and simulations of the different composite materials were carried out. The results showed that the epoxy matrix composites reinforced with natural fibers had similar or even superior mechanical properties to those of conventional materials, depending on their anisotropic design. In addition to the comparison of the mechanical properties, an environmental impact analysis was carried out between the composite materials addressed and the conventional materials, in order to determine their environmental footprint and evaluate their impact on the environment. Thus, it was found that natural fiber composite materials had a lower environmental footprint compared to conventional materials. In this sense, research in composite materials remains a constantly evolving field, which seeks to improve the properties and characteristics of existing materials, as well as explore new alternatives for their use in different areas. From a sustainable perspective, the use of composite materials in the manufacture of parts and components offers a promising alternative to reduce the environmental footprint of the industry and promote more responsible practices with the environment. In conclusion, research in composite materials has made significant advances in recent decades, with the development of new materials and manufacturing techniques. These materials offer a wide variety of applications in different sectors. In addition, the incorporation of biodegradable and recyclable materials in composites promotes more sustainable and responsible practices with the environment.
Spanish abstract:	En la actualidad, la sostenibilidad ambiental se ha convertido en uno de los mayores desaf�os a nivel mundial. La producci�n de bienes y servicios ha estado hist�ricamente asociada a la generaci�n de emisiones contaminantes, residuos y otros impactos ambientales negativos. Con el fin de revertir esta tendencia, se han propuesto m�ltiples soluciones, entre ellas, la implementaci�n de materiales compuestos provenientes de materiales reciclados y org�nicos. Los materiales compuestos se forman a partir de una matriz con ciertas propiedades mec�nicas y un refuerzo con otras propiedades diferentes que complementan el comportamiento de la pieza desarrollada. Estos materiales ofrecen una serie de ventajas sobre los materiales convencionales, tales como una mayor resistencia, durabilidad, ligereza y la posibilidad de adaptarse a diferentes dise�os y formas. Sin embargo, tambi�n presentaban algunos desaf�os en su implementaci�n, como la selecci�n adecuada de los materiales que compondr�an el compuesto, la optimizaci�n de su dise�o y la evaluaci�n de su impacto ambiental. En este contexto, se realiz� un proyecto de investigaci�n que busc� la sustituci�n de materiales convencionales para mejorar la empleabilidad en la fabricaci�n de piezas con materiales compuestos. El proyecto se enfoc� en la caracterizaci�n y mejora de las propiedades de resistencia y rigidez de una pieza de bicicleta, mediante la selecci�n de diferentes refuerzos de fibra de origen natural y la matriz epoxi. Se seleccionaron tres tipos de fibras de origen natural para ser utilizadas como refuerzo: la fibra de palma, la fibra de ca�a de az�car y la lignina en polvo. Estas fibras fueron elegidas debido a su alta resistencia y rigidez, as� como por su origen renovable y biodegradable. Se compararon las propiedades mec�nicas de los compuestos de matriz epoxi reforzados con estas fibras con las de los materiales convencionales utilizados en la fabricaci�n de piezas de bicicleta. Para llevar a cabo la comparaci�n, la pieza de la bicicleta fue modelada utilizando el software SolidWorks y se llevaron a cabo simulaciones de los diferentes materiales compuestos. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que los compuestos de matriz epoxi reforzados con fibras de origen natural ten�an propiedades mec�nicas similares o incluso superiores a las de los materiales convencionales, dependiendo esto de su dise�o anisotr�pico. Adem�s de la comparaci�n de las propiedades mec�nicas, se realiz� un an�lisis de impacto ambiental entre los materiales compuestos abordados y los materiales convencionales, con el fin de determinar su huella ambiental y evaluar su impacto en el medio ambiente. De esta forma, se encontr� que los materiales compuestos de origen natural ten�an una huella ambiental m�s baja en comparaci�n con los materiales convencionales. En este sentido, la investigaci�n en materiales compuestos sigue siendo un campo en constante evoluci�n, que busca mejorar las propiedades y caracter�sticas de los materiales existentes, as� como explorar nuevas alternativas para su uso en diferentes �reas. Desde una perspectiva sostenible, el uso de materiales compuestos en la fabricaci�n de piezas y componentes ofrece una alternativa prometedora para reducir la huella ambiental de la industria y promover pr�cticas m�s responsables con el medio ambiente. En conclusi�n, la investigaci�n en materiales compuestos ha tenido importantes avances en las �ltimas d�cadas, con el desarrollo de nuevos materiales y t�cnicas de fabricaci�n. Estos materiales ofrecen una amplia variedad de aplicaciones en diferentes sectores. Adem�s, la incorporaci�n de materiales biodegradables y reciclables en los compuestos promueve pr�cticas m�s sostenibles y responsables con el medio ambiente.
