English title:	Design and fabrication methodology for canine transmetatarsal prostheses by additive manufacturing.

English abstract:	A huge disadvantage in the daily life of any domestic animal is a limb absence, either by congenital or acquired disease, this situation prevents them from performing their usual activities properly and affects their owners emotionally. The importance of early post-trauma correction of this condition lies in the fact that various permanent musculoskeletal malformations may eventually occur as a result of improper posture and movement. Furthermore, the anatomical complexity of each case requires customized fabrication of a prosthesis, making the process costly and time-consuming. A proper solution for these requirements is provided by additive manufacturing, so in this paper we propose a design and fabrication methodology for low-cost customized prostheses applied to a case study, using computational modeling techniques and 3D printing as the main manufacturing method. We worked on the development of two transmetatarsal prostheses for a twelve-month-old female German Shepherd with absence of both hind limbs, to fulfill the function of the absent joints at tarsus level and accelerate the adaptation through the early device implementation. An initial amputated limb residual digitization was performed by photogrammetry to obtain the approximate geometry of each limb. Simultaneously, the biometry of the animal was taken in an anatomical position to make a comparison with the same breed canine in adult stage, in order to define the prosthesis dimensions and proceed with its design and modeling in a CAD software. Subsequently, the prostheses were manufactured by fused deposition modeling of flexible PLA+ with a focus on the variation of the filler density, with the purpose of modifying the mechanical properties in different sections of the impression, looking for rigidity in the support area and flexibility in the coupling with the residual limb. With the final implementation of the prostheses, a good fit was observed in the coupling with the limb, as well as a correct rigidity in the support validated by a stress-strain analysis by finite elements, which, combined with the structural design, has an impact on the proper posture and correct walking of the animal, concluding with a process of easy replicability and low cost that allows to obtain a quick solution for animals in a similar situation. Spanish abstract:	Una gran desventaja en la vida cotidiana de cualquier animal dom�stico es la ausencia de una extremidad, ya sea por una enfermedad cong�nita o adquirida, esta situaci�n les impide realizar sus actividades habituales de manera adecuada y afecta emocionalmente a sus cuidadores. La importancia de corregir esta discapacidad a la mayor brevedad despu�s del trauma radica en que eventualmente se presentan diversas malformaciones musco-esquel�ticas permanentes a causa de posturas y movimientos inadecuados. Por otro lado, debido a la complejidad anat�mica de cada caso, se hace necesaria la fabricaci�n personalizada de una pr�tesis, haciendo que el proceso sea costoso y tard�o. Una soluci�n adecuada para estas condiciones es ofrecida por la manufactura aditiva, raz�n por la cual en este trabajo se propone una metodolog�a de dise�o y fabricaci�n para pr�tesis personalizadas de bajo costo aplicada a un caso de estudio, utilizando t�cnicas de modelado computacional y la impresi�n 3D como principal m�todo de manufactura. Se trabaj� en el desarrollo de dos pr�tesis transmetatarsales para un pastor alem�n hembra de doce meses con ausencia de ambas extremidades posteriores a nivel del tarso, a fin de que cumplan la funci�n de las articulaciones ausentes en el animal, acelerando su adaptaci�n a trav�s de la temprana implementaci�n del dispositivo. Inicialmente se realiz� la digitalizaci�n de los miembros residuales por fotogrametr�a para obtener la geometr�a aproximada de cada miembro, simult�neamente se realizaron tomas de la biometr�a del animal en posici�n anat�mica para realizar una comparativa con un canino de su misma raza en etapa adulta, esto para definir las dimensiones de las pr�tesis y proceder con su dise�o y modelado en un software CAD. Posteriormente se realiz� la manufactura de las pr�tesis mediante el modelado por deposici�n fundida de PLA+ flexible con un enfoque en la variaci�n de la densidad de relleno, a efectos de modificar las propiedades mec�nicas en diferentes secciones de la impresi�n, buscando rigidez en la zona de apoyo y flexibilidad en el acople con el miembro residual. Con la implementaci�n final de las pr�tesis se observ� un buen ajuste en el acople con la extremidad residual, as� como una correcta rigidez en el apoyo validada por un an�lisis de esfuerzo-deformaci�n por elementos finitos, lo cual, junto con el dise�o estructural, repercuti� en la correcta postura y posterior caminata del animal, concluyendo con un proceso de f�cil replicabilidad y bajo costo que permite obtener una soluci�n r�pida para animales en una situaci�n similar.
