English title:	Synthetic hydroxyapatite coatings doped with copper ions

English abstract:	The coating of metallic materials is a topic that has aroused great interest among researchers nowadays due to its high potential for medical applications. Hydroxyapatite is one of the most promising materials in this field due to its bioactive, biocompatible, and non-toxic properties [1], in addition to its chemical composition like human bone and its ability to chemically bond to bone [5], making it an ideal material for medical applications. However, hydroxyapatite has limitations as a raw material when it is used in areas subject to mechanical stress due to its fragility. To address this problem, materials such as titanium, steel, and alloys used in stressful situations can be coated [2]. Hydroxyapatite coatings can improve the osteointegration of implants and reduce the body rejection rate [6][7]. Currently, research is focused on improving the properties of hydroxyapatite by including chemical elements and synthesis techniques. Copper is one of the most attractive elements for coatings because it is an essential element in human metabolism, and it has been shown to have beneficial properties for bone health and angiogenesis [5], such as low cytotoxicity, antibacterial behavior, and biocompatibility [3]. Copper ions can promote the proliferation of human endothelial cells and the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells towards the osteogenic phenotype [5]. Moreover, it has been shown that copper can inhibit the activity of osteoclasts and stimulate the aggregation of elastin fibers in mature fibers, promoting the deposition of the elastin matrix [5]. The incorporation of copper ions into the hydroxyapatite matrix could improve the mechanical integrity and antibacterial capacity of coatings for biomedical applications [4]. With this in mind, the developed work studied the effect of the incorporation of copper metal ions in hydroxyapatite coatings on silicon substrates by laser ablation technique and their respective characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD characterization was used to determine the crystalline phases and changes in the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of hydroxyapatite coatings, resulting in HAp and HApCu coatings being crystalline and mainly composed of hydroxyapatite. SEM images showed that the coatings are composed of micrometer and submicrometer-sized particles. Additionally, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was performed to visualize the chemical composition of the samples and monitor changes in calcium, phosphorus, and copper concentrations in the coatings. To study the vibrational states of hydroxyapatite coatings, FTIR characterization was performed, where the characteristic bands of functional groups present in HAp and HApCu coatings were observed. From the above, it was concluded that analyzing XRD characterization, the incorporation of copper affects the size of hydroxyapatite crystals since the crystal size increases when copper is incorporated regardless of the number of copper threads used. Analyzing SEM, the deposition is given in a homogeneous way with micrometer-sized granules independently of the incorporation of copper.
Spanish abstract:	El recubrimiento de materiales met�licos es un tema que ha despertado gran inter�s en los investigadores de hoy en d�a debido su alto potencial para aplicaciones m�dicas. La hidroxiapatita es de los materiales m�s prometedores en este campo gracias a sus propiedades bioactivas, biocompatibles y no t�xicas [1], adicional a su composici�n qu�mica similar a la del hueso humano y su capacidad para unirse qu�micamente al hueso[5] , lo que la hace un material id�neo para aplicaciones m�dicas. Sin embargo, la hidroxiapatita tiene limitaciones como material crudo cuando se utiliza en �reas sujetas a estr�s mec�nico debido a su fragilidad, como soluci�n a esta problem�tica se pueden recubrir materiales como titanio, acero y aleaciones utilizados en situaciones estresantes [2]. Los recubrimientos de hidroxiapatita pueden mejorar la osteointegraci�n de los implantes y reducir la tasa de rechazo del cuerpo[6][7]. Actualmente, se busca poder mejorar las propiedades de la hidroxiapatita mediante la inclusi�n de elementos qu�micos y t�cnicas de s�ntesis. El cobre es uno de los elementos m�s atractivos para recubrimientos puesto que es un elemento esencial en el metabolismo humano y se ha demostrado que tiene propiedades beneficiosas para la salud �sea y la angiog�nesis[5] , tales como baja citotoxicidad, comportamiento antibacteriano y biocompatibilidad [3]. Los iones de cobre pueden promover la proliferaci�n de c�lulas endoteliales humanas y la diferenciaci�n de c�lulas madre mesenquimales hacia el fenotipo osteog�nico[5] . Adem�s, se ha demostrado que el cobre puede inhibir la actividad de los osteoclastos y estimular la agregaci�n de fibras de elastina en fibras maduras, promoviendo la deposici�n de la matriz de elastina[5] . La incorporaci�n de iones de cobre en la matriz de hidroxiapatita podr�a mejorar la integridad mec�nica y la capacidad antibacteriana de los recubrimientos para aplicaciones biom�dicas[4]., teniendo esto en cuenta, el trabajo desarrollado estudi� el efecto de la incorporaci�n de los iones met�licos de cobre en recubrimientos de hidroxiapatita sobre sustratos de silicio por la t�cnica de ablaci�n laser y su respectiva caracterizaci�n por medio de difracci�n de rayos X (DXR), microscopia electr�nica de barrido (SEM) y espectroscopia infrarroja por transformada de Fourier (FTIR). La caracterizaci�n por DXR se utiliz� para determinar las fases cristalinas y los cambios en el ancho completo a la mitad del m�ximo (FWHM) de los recubrimientos de hidroxiapatita, obteniendo como resultado que los recubrimientos de HAp y HApCu son cristalinos y est�n compuestos principalmente de hidroxiapatita. En SEM se obtuvieron im�genes que permitieron visualizar que los recubrimientos est�n compuestos de part�culas de tama�o microm�trico y submicrom�trico, adicional, se realiz� un an�lisis de Espectroscop�a de Dispersi�n de Energ�a de Rayos X (EDS) para visualizar la composici�n qu�mica de las muestras y poder monitorear los cambios en las concentraciones de calcio, fosforo y cobre en los recubrimientos. Para estudiar los estados vibratorios de los recubrimientos de hidroxiapatita se realiz� una caracterizaci�n por FTIR, donde se pudo observar las bandas caracter�sticas de los grupos funcionales presentes en los recubrimientos de HAp y HApCu. A partir de lo anterior, se lleg� a la conclusi�n de que analizando la caracterizaci�n por DXR la incorporaci�n de cobre afecta el tama�o de los cristales de hidroxiapatita, debido que al incorporarlo se puede ver que aumenta el tama�o del cristal independientemente del n�mero de hilos de cobre que se hayan utilizado y analizando SEM la deposici�n se da de una forma homog�nea con tama�os de orden microm�trico para los gr�nulos independientemente de la incorporaci�n del cobre.
