English title:	Comparative axial compression testing of porcine vertebrae by laboratory testing and finite element analysis

English abstract:	The study of pig bones, due to their similarity with human tissues, has allowed for the development, updating, and selection of technological tools that aid in the improvement of diagnosing diseases and injuries that may affect the skeletal system. Radiomic techniques involving diagnostic medical image segmentation, along with finite element analysis, enable the detailed study of bone damage, loss of density, and mechanical functionality, which is a significant advancement in personalized medicine. In this study, laboratory tests are conducted on axial loads to L3-L6 pig vertebrae, their mechanical properties are characterized, and the maximum loads that they can withstand in the elastic zone are determined. Furthermore, 3D models are generated through the segmentation of computed tomography images of the vertebrae. A digital shadow of the vertebra is constructed by assigning an anisotropic material model to the reconstructed geometry. Subsequently, finite element analysis is performed to determine the elastic characteristics, strength, and displacement. Once the information is obtained, it is compared between the experimental data and the numerical model, showing a good correlation, with a difference of less than 0.8% in Young's modulus and 1.53% in displacement. The proposed methodology will aid in obtaining more precise medical results, using models that will serve as a reference for diagnosis.
Spanish abstract:	El estudio de los huesos porcinos, por su similitud con los tejidos en el ser humano, ha permitido obtener, actualizar y seleccionar herramientas tecnol�gicas que ayudan a mejorar el diagn�stico de enfermedades y lesiones que pueden afectar el sistema �seo. Las t�cnicas radi�micas que involucran la segmentaci�n de im�genes m�dicas diagn�sticas, junto con an�lisis de elementos finitos, permiten el estudio detallado de las afectaciones en los huesos, incluyendo deterioro, p�rdida de densidad y de funcionalidad mec�nica, siendo un avance importante dentro del �mbito de la medicina personalizada. En este trabajo se realizan ensayos de laboratorio con cargas axiales a las v�rtebras L3-L6 de porcino, se caracterizan las propiedades mec�nicas y determinan las cargas m�ximas que pueden soportar en la zona el�stica. Por otro lado, con la segmentaci�n de la tomograf�a axial computarizada de las v�rtebras se genera un modelo 3d. Adem�s, se construye una sombra digital de la v�rtebra asignando un modelo de material anis�tropo a la geometr�a reconstruida. Posteriormente, se realiza el an�lisis de elementos finitos para determinar las caracter�sticas el�sticas, su resistencia y su desplazamiento. Una vez obtenida la informaci�n, se compara entre los datos experimentales y el modelo num�rico, mostrando una buena correlaci�n, con una diferencia inferior al 0,8% en el m�dulo de Young, y 1,53% en el desplazamiento. La metodolog�a planteada ayudar� a la obtenci�n de resultados m�dicos con mayor precisi�n, empleando modelos que servir�n como referencia para el diagn�stico.
