English abstract:	Photocatalysis has become important in the development of sustainable technologies for environmental remediation and energy conversion. The design of a photocatalyst that can efficiently utilize visible light without the drawback of increased recombination is a critical challenge. Bismuth-based compounds have recently been recognized as the basis for multifunctional ceramics with applications in environmental remediation, alternative clean piezoelectric power, smart materials and biomedicine. Particularly, visible light photoactive (NaxK1-x)1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NKBT) heterojunctions have demonstrated their applicability in environmental remediation. In this work, piezoelectric powders of Bismuth-based perovskite (NaxK1-x)1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NKBT100x), where x = 1, 0.8 and 0.6, were synthesized by ball milling and solid-state reaction. The results of physical, chemical and photocatalytic properties of NBT and NKBT 60 based powders/coatings are reported. In experiments spraying powders in a mixture of NKBT 60 and Bismuth (Bi) metal powders in a 50/50 vol:vol ratio and, collected in a staged powder reactor, their structural, microstructural and optical characteristics were obtained, as well as their effect on the photocatalytic activity in two model reactions: photodegradation of rhodamine B (irradiation and photooxidation of methanol in formaldehyde, both under sunlight). According to the structural and chemical analysis, flame spraying is an advantageous method that allows growing NBKT - bismuth titanates - titanium oxides (anatase and/or rutile) - bet-Bi2O3 - Bi heterojunctions from NBKT/Bi mixtures in a top-down approach. Variations in phase content in the heterojunction can be adjusted by collecting the powders at different stages of the powder reactor. Further characterizations showed that the obtained powders exhibit raspberry-like morphology and nanostructured active surfaces as well as reduced visible light forbidden band energies. The multiphase heterojunction powder of beta -Bi2O3 - NKBT40 - Bi4Ti3O12 - Bi12TiO20 - anatase - Bi presented the highest photocatalytic performance. The reaction rate constant, kRhB and kMetOH were calculated to be 33.45 x 10-3 min-1 and 0.25 x 10-6 min-1, respectively, making this material more photoactive than those used commercially and suitable for these reactions. NBT microspheres were also deposited by oxyacetylene flame spraying. The physicochemical properties were analyzed as a function of the spray parameters: fuel/oxygen ratio (F/O), standoff distance (SOD) and total gas flow (TF). A flame with reducing characteristics promotes the formation of TiO2 (anatase and rutile) and Bi4Ti3O12, while an oxidizing flame results in coatings rich in NBT and Bi4Ti3O12. The SOD mainly influences the degree of crystallinity, which is higher at shorter distances. Optical properties estimated by UV-VIS diffuse reflectance confirmed an increase in light absorption after the FS process, with an Eg redshift from 3.32 eV of the NBT powder to 2.63-2.96 eV of the coatings. These values are F/O dependent, with a significant narrowing of Eg under reducing conditions. Photoelectrochemical measurements revealed that faster electron uptake is obtained due to the transformations occurring throughout the FS process, while retaining almost 70% and 88% of the photocurrent density (jph) at UV and visible light, respectively. These results suggest the great potential of the FS methodology to produce multiphase photocatalytic coatings by tuning the processing parameters.
Spanish abstract:	La fotocat�lisis ha cobrado importancia en el desarrollo de tecnolog�as sostenibles para la recuperaci�n del medio ambiente y la conversi�n de energ�a. El dise�o de un fotocatalizador que pueda utilizar eficazmente la luz visible sin el inconveniente de una mayor recombinaci�n es un reto cr�tico. Recientemente se ha reconocido que los compuestos basados en el bismuto son la base de cer�micas multifuncionales con aplicaciones en la remediaci�n medioambiental, la energ�a piezoel�ctrica limpia alternativa, los materiales inteligentes y la biomedicina. En particular, las heterouniones fotoactivas a la luz visible (NaxK1-x)1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NKBT) han demostrado su aplicabilidad en la remediaci�n medioambiental. En este trabajo, se sintetizaron polvos piezoel�ctricos de perovskita basada en bismuto (NaxK1-x)1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NKBT100x), donde x = 1, 0,8 y 0,6, mediante molienda con bolas y reacci�n en estado s�lido. Se reportan los resultados de las propiedades f�sicas, qu�micas y fotocatal�ticas de los polvos/recubrimientos basados en NBT y NKBT 60. En experimentos rociados con una mezcla de polvos de NKBT 60 y polvos met�licos de Bismuto (Bi) en una proporci�n 50/50 vol:vol y, recogidos en un reactor de polvos por etapas, se obtuvieron sus caracter�sticas estructurales, microestructurales y �pticas, as� como su efecto sobre la actividad fotocatal�tica en dos reacciones modelo: fotodegradaci�n de rodamina B (irradiaci�n y fotooxidaci�n de metanol en formaldeh�do, ambas bajo luz solar). Seg�n el an�lisis estructural y qu�mico, el rociado con llama es un m�todo ventajoso que permite cultivar heterouniones NBKT - titanatos de bismuto - �xidos de titanio (anatasa y/o rutilo) - beta-Bi2O3 - Bi a partir de mezclas NBKT/Bi en un enfoque descendente. Las variaciones en el contenido de fase en la heterouni�n pueden ajustarse recogiendo los polvos en diferentes etapas del reactor de polvo. Otras caracterizaciones mostraron que los polvos obtenidos presentan una morfolog�a similar a la de la frambuesa y superficies activas nanoestructuradas, as� como energ�as de banda prohibida de luz visible reducidas. El polvo heterouni�n multifase de beta -Bi2O3 - NKBT40 - Bi4Ti3O12 - Bi12TiO20 - anatasa - Bi present� el mayor rendimiento fotocatal�tico. La constante de velocidad de reacci�n, kRhB y kMetOH se calcularon en 33,45 x 10-3 min-1 y 0,25 x 10-6 min-1, respectivamente, lo que hace que este material sea m�s fotoactivo que los utilizados comercialmente y adecuado para estas reacciones. Tambi�n se depositaron microesferas de NBT mediante rociado con llama oxiacetil�nica. Se analizaron las propiedades fisicoqu�micas en funci�n de los par�metros del rociado: relaci�n combustible/ox�geno (F/O), distancia de separaci�n (SOD) y flujo total de gas (TF). Una llama con caracter�sticas reductoras promueve la formaci�n de TiO2 (anatasa y rutilo) y Bi4Ti3O12, mientras que una llama oxidante da lugar a recubrimientos ricos en NBT y Bi4Ti3O12. La SOD influye principalmente en el grado de cristalinidad, que es mayor a distancias m�s cortas. Las propiedades �pticas estimadas por reflectancia difusa UV-VIS confirmaron un aumento de la absorci�n de luz tras el proceso de FS, con un desplazamiento al rojo de Eg de 3,32 eV del polvo de NBT a 2,63-2,96 eV de los recubrimientos. Estos valores son dependientes de F/O, con un estrechamiento significativo de Eg en condiciones reductoras. Las medidas fotoelectroqu�micas revelaron que se obtiene una captaci�n de electrones m�s r�pida debido a las transformaciones que tienen lugar a lo largo del proceso de FS, conservando casi el 70% y el 88% de la densidad de fotocorriente (jph) a luz UV y visible, respectivamente. Estos resultados sugieren el gran potencial de la metodolog�a FS para producir recubrimientos fotocatal�ticos multif�sicos mediante el ajuste de los par�metros de procesamiento.
