English title:	Chitosan-activated carbons: an option for the manufacture of low-cost supercapacitor electrodes
Spanish title:	Carbones activados de quitosano: una opci?n para la fabricaci?n de electrodos de supercapacitores de bajo costo
English abstract:	ctivated carbon (AC) is obtained from commercial chitosan by the hydrothermal carbonisation method, assisted with phosphoric acid and subsequent physical activation at temperatures of 500, 700 and 900 ?C. The coals obtained were physically and chemically characterised using techniques such as: TGA,?FTIR, and SEM/EDS. Surface area and pore size were determined from N2 sorption and desorption analysis. The electrochemical properties were evaluated by voltammetric tests in a three-electrode cell with a 1M HCl electrolyte, for which AC working electrodes and copper tape were fabricated. Coals with a pore size of less than 2 nm were obtained, indicating that they are microporous coals. The highest surface area was presented by the CA at 900?C, 627.423 m2⁄g, which also had the highest specific capacitance of 346 μF/g. The hydrothermal carbonisation method combined with physical activation was found to be efficient to produce CAs from chitosan, with large surface areas, of great importance for the fabrication of supercapacitor electrodes.
Spanish abstract:	Se obtiene carb?n activado (CA) a partir de quitosano comercial por el m?todo de carbonizaci?n hidrotermal, asistido con ?cido fosf?rico y posterior activaci?n f?sica a temperaturas de 500, 700 y 900 ?C. Los carbones obtenidos se caracterizaron f?sica y qu?micamente con t?cnicas como: TGA, FTIR, EDS y MEB. El ?rea superficial y el tama?o de poro, se determinaron a partir de an?lisis de sortometr?a mediante la sorci?n y desorci?n de N2. Las propiedades electroqu?micas se evaluaron mediante pruebas voltamperom?tricas, en una celda de tres electrodos con un electrolito de HCl 1M, para lo cual se fabricaron electrodos de trabajo de CA y cinta adhesiva de cobre. Se obtuvieron carbones con un tama?o de poro inferior a 2 nm, lo que indica que son carbones microporosos. La mayor ?rea superficial la present? el CA a 900?C, , el cual tambi?n tuvo la mayor capacitancia espec?fica de 346 μF/g. Se encontr? que el m?todo de carbonizaci?n hidrotermal combinado con activaci?n f?sica es eficiente para producir CAs a partir de quitosano, con ?reas superficiales amplias, de gran importancia para la fabricaci?n de electrodos supercapacitores.
