English title:	Characterizaci�n of materials to develop corrosion sensors to building industry

English abstract:	This research work is a first step in the development of a simple, versatile and economical sensor to be embedded in reinforced concrete structures to determine the corrosion rate of reinforcing steel. The feasibility of using galvanic couple current monitoring as a method to sense and assess the level of rebar corrosion was investigated. To this purpose, the electrochemical behavior of four candidate metals to build the sensor (SAE 1040 carbon steel, copper, AISI 304 stainless steel and titanium) embedded in mortar and exposed to different environmental conditions was characterized. Three proposed galvanic couples (carbon steel/stainless steel, carbon steel/copper and carbon steel/titanium), as well as carbon steel bars (of the same type of those used as reinforcements) were embedded in mortar specimens. The objective was to find out a correlation between the current of the galvanic couples and the real corrosion rate of the rebars in a broad range of environmental conditions. It was found that copper and titanium showed good resistance to localized corrosion, being excellent candidates to be used in highly corrosive environments, particularly in the presence of chlorides. However, from the electrochemical characterization, it became evident that the metal generating the greatest galvanic currents when coupled with the carbon steel was cooper. Furthermore, the measurement of the galvanic current showed the importance of the anodic/cathodic area ratio relationship. It was found that when the anode/cathode area ratio was 1:7, a correlation between the galvanic current of the carbon steel/copper couple and the corrosion current of the carbon steel could be established. As a conclusion, among the three galvanic couples proposed, the carbon steel/copper one seems to be the most promising one to build a sensor.
Spanish abstract:	Este trabajo de investigaci�n es el primer paso en el desarrollo de un sensor simple, vers�til y econ�mico para ser embebido en estructuras de hormig�n armado para determinar la velocidad de corrosi�n del acero de refuerzo, y est� basado en el principio de par galv�nico. Con este fin, en primera instancia se caracteriz� el comportamiento electroqu�mico de cuatro metales candidatos a formar parte del sensor (acero al carbono SAE 1040, cobre, acero inoxidable AISI 304 y titanio), embebidos en mortero y expuestos a diferentes condiciones ambientales. Posteriormente se estudi� la viabilidad del monitoreo de la corriente galv�nica como m�todo para establecer y detectar el nivel de corrosi�n de las barras de refuerzo. A tal efecto, se fabricaron probetas de mortero con los tres pares galv�nicos propuestos (acero al carbono/acero inoxidable, acero al carbono/cobre y acero al carbono/titanio) embebidos en ellas, as� como tambi�n probetas de mortero con barras de acero al carbono (del mismo tipo de material usado como refuerzo). El objetivo fue establecer si existe una correlaci�n entre la corriente de los pares y la velocidad de corrosi�n de las barras de refuerzo en una amplia gama de condiciones ambientales. En la caracterizaci�n electroqu�mica se hizo evidente que el metal que genera mayores corrientes galv�nicas al ser acoplado con acero al carbono fue el Cu. Adem�s, se encontr� que el cobre y el titanio presentaron buena resistencia a la corrosi�n localizada, siendo excelentes candidatos para ser usados en ambientes altamente agresivos, en especial por la presencia de cloruros. Por otro lado, la medici�n de la corriente galv�nica mostr� la importancia de la relaci�n de �rea �nodo/c�todo. Se encontr� que cuando esta relaci�n es de 1:7, se puede establecer una relaci�n entre la corriente galv�nica del par de acero al carbono/cobre y la corriente de corrosi�n del acero al carbono. Entre los tres pares galv�nicos propuestos, el par acero al carbono/cobre es el m�s promisorio para construir un sensor del tipo propuesto.
