English title:	Characterization of energy fluctuations in an electronic system connected to a Maxwell demon implemented with CMOS inverter pairs

English abstract:	The energy in an electronic system is determined by the potential difference and the electrical charge carriers on it. In the case of CMOS transistors, the electrical charge carriers may be electrons or holes, which may be subjected to a potential difference imposed by the connection of the electronic system to an external voltage source. Assuming an ideal constant voltage source, the imposed potential difference can be considered to be a time-invariant constant, i.e., fluctuations-free. However, electrons, or holes, interacting with the external electric potential may manifest fluctuations in their energy, e.g., due to thermal effects. Consequently, the energy of charge carriers can be modeled as a random variable with which a standard deviation is associated, characterizing their fluctuations. Recently, Freitas and Esposito \cite{Freitas2022} demonstrated that a CMOS inverter pair can be configured as Maxwell's daemon, thus allowing the study in the laboratory of out-of-equilibrium processes that also exhibit the atypical phenomenon associated with such daemon. In this sense, by connecting the electronic system to the Maxwell daemon, its behavior is altered, and the effects of this on the system states can be studied. In this work, we report the implementation of a CMOS electronic system with a Freitas-Esposito Maxwell daemon, which was characterized by measurements long enough in time to capture the statistical information of the system. Among the results observed in this study, two stand out: first, the observation of fluctuations in the potential difference consistent with those expected in a Brownian motion and second, the observation of two energy states for conditions of low external excitation or even in the absence of external excitation.
Spanish abstract:	La energ�a en un sistema electr�nico est� determinada por la diferencia de potencial y los portadores de carga el�ctricas que la experimentan. En el caso de transistores CMOS, los portadores de carga el�ctricas pueden ser electrones o huecos, que pueden estar sometidos a una diferencia de potencial impuesta por la conexi�n del sistema electr�nico a una fuente de voltaje externa. Si se supone una fuente de voltaje constante ideal, se puede considerar que la diferencia de potencial impuesta es una constante invariante en el tiempo, es decir, carece de fluctuaciones. Sin embargo, los electrones, o huecos, que interact�an con el potencial el�ctrico externo pueden manifestar fluctuaciones en su energ�a, por ejemplo, debidas a efectos t�rmicos. En consecuencia, la energ�a de los portadores de carga puede ser modelada como una variable aleatoria a la que se le asocia una desviaci�n est�ndar, la cual caracteriza sus fluctuaciones. Recientemente Nahuel Freitas y Massimiliano Esposito \cite{Freitas2022} demostraron que un par inversor CMOS puede ser configurado como un demonio de Maxwell, permitiendo as� estudiar en el laboratorio procesos fuera del equilibrio que adem�s exhiben el at�pico fen�meno asociado a dicho demonio. En tal sentido, al conectar el sistema electr�nico al demonio de Maxwell se altera su comportamiento y se pueden estudiar los efectos de este sobre los estados del sistema. En este trabajo se reporta la implementaci�n de un sistema electr�nico CMOS con un demonio de Maxwell tipo Freitas-Esposito, el cual fue caracterizado a partir de mediciones suficientemente largas en el tiempo para capturar la informaci�n estad�stica del sistema. Entre los resultados observados en este estudio se destacan dos, primero, la observaci�n de fluctuaciones en la diferencia de potencial consistentes con las esperadas en un movimiento browniano y segundo, la observaci�n de dos estados de energ�a para condiciones de baja excitaci�n externa o, incluso, en la carencia de excitaci�n externa.
