English title:	Optimization of the synthetic method for obtaining geopolymers
Spanish title:	Optimizaci�n del m�todo de s�ntesis para la obtenci�n de geopol�meros
English abstract:	Due to the total CO2 emissions of cement manufacturing industries worldwide, they represent 5-7% of greenhouse gas emissions due to the calcination of limestone, combusti�n, and transport and manufacturing operations of ordinary Portland cement. Taking into account that the socio-economic development and the exponential increase of the population have significantly increased demand for cement, as an essential material for construction, and with it, the increase in CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere, inorganic polymers have emerged as a viable alternative to be implemented as cementitious materials since they can provide performance comparable to traditional cement with an added value and that these reduce greenhouse gas emissions, specifically CO2 emissions generated by the cement and concrete industries by almost 80%. However, not all geopolymers have viable properties to be implemented as alternative cement. The properties of the inorganic polymer depend on the raw material; the design of the synthesis process is key for the optimization of the properties and consequent final application of the geopolymeric material. It is for this reason that the present study consists of the optimization of the method for obtaining cementitious geopolymers by implementing the industrial calamine residue produced in the Industrias met�licas asociadas IMAL S.A. Bogot�, Colombia. In this company, calamine is generated during the thermal treatment of steel. In this research, the effect of four different parameters of synthesis on the geopolymer mechanical properties was evaluated; for the solid phase, the behavior of the mechanical strength according to the solid/liquid, calamine: sand ratio was studied. In the liquid phase, the Na2SiO3:NaOH ratio and initial concentration of NaOH present in the alkaline solution were evaluated. Results obtained showed that calamine is a functional raw material to produce cementitious inorganic polymers through the geopolymerization technique. Geopolymeric material formed exhibits a maximum value of mechanical resistance equal to 18.04 MPa under the optimum conditions here stablished: solid/liquid ratio: 3.5 g/mL, Na2SiO3:NaOH 9:1, calamine: sand 10:0 and [NaOH]= 10 M.
Spanish abstract:	En raz�n a las enormes emisiones de CO2 generadas por la industria de manufactura del cemento a nivel mundial, estas representan entre el 5% y el 7% de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y son causadas por la calcinaci�n de piedra caliza, la combusti�n y las operaciones de f�brica y transporte del cemento Portland com�n. Teniendo presente que el desarrollo socio econ�mico y el incremento exponencial de la poblaci�n, ha incrementado significativamente la demanda de cemento, como material primordial para la construcci�n, y con ello, el incremento de las concentraciones de CO2 en la atm�sfera, los pol�meros inorg�nicos emergen como materiales cementantes alternativos viables toda vez que, estos exhiben un desempe�o comparable al del cemento convencional con un valor agregado; esto es, reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, espec�ficamente, aten�an la emisi�n de CO2 en las industrias de concreto y cemento, en casi un 80%.Sin embargo, no todos los geopol�meros tienen propiedades viables para ser implementados como un cemento alternativo. Las propiedades de estos pol�meros inorg�nicos dependen de la materia prima usada para su obtenci�n; el dise�o del proceso de s�ntesis es clave para la optimizaci�n de las propiedades y consecuente aplicaci�n final del material geopolim�rico, Es por esta raz�n que este estudio consiste en la optimizaci�n del m�todo para la obtenci�n de geopol�meros cementantes a partir de calamina, un residuo producido en las Industrias met�licas asociadas IMAL S.A. Bogot�, Colombia. En esta f�brica, la calamina se genera durante el tratamiento t�rmico del acero. En esta investigaci�n, se evalu� el efecto de cuatro par�metros de s�ntesis sobre las propiedades mec�nicas de los geopol�meros, as�: en la fase s�lida, se evalu� el comportamiento de la resistencia mec�nica de acuerdo a la relaci�n s�lido/l�quido, relaci�n calamina:arena. En la fase l�quida se evalu� la relaci�n Na2SiO3:NaOH y la concentraci�n de NaOH presente en la soluci�n alcalina. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que la calamina es una materia prima funcional para producir pol�meros inorg�nicos cementantes a trav�s de la geopolimerizaci�n. El material geopolim�rico formado exhibe un valor m�ximo de resistencia mec�nica de 18.04 MPa bajo las condiciones �ptimas establecidas en este trabajo: relaci�n s�lido/l�quido de 3.5 g/mL, Na2SiO3:NaOH 9:1, calamina: arena 10:0 and [NaOH]= 10 M.
