English title:	Microstructure and mechanical properties of oxynitrided Ti-6Al-4V water collected in-flight particles from twin wire arc spraying

English abstract:	The mechanism of solidification and the reaction of Ti-6Al-4V particles in flight with the surrounding atmosphere and during the formation of coatings deposited by twin wire arc spraying (TWAS) is complex, and there are no previous reports in the literature. This work studies the microstructure, chemical composition, and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V in-flight particles melted and atomized by TWAS using nitrogen as a carrier gas. The particles were collected in water at two stand-off distances (SOD) (25 and 125 mm). XRD identified phases, and their chemical compositions were quantified by WDS analysis. Mechanical properties (hardness, H, and reduced elastic modulus, Er) were determined by nanoindentation using a sphere-conical diamond tip. The in-flight particles show the presence of a-Ti, b-Ti, TiN, and TiO2 phases. SEM observed an equiaxial and columnar dendritic microstructure on the surface and cross-section of the particles for both SOD and mainly two phases were quantified: (Ti,V,Al)Ox and (Ti,V)Nx corresponding to the dendritic and interdendritic regions, respectively. The average values (H, Er) in the (Ti,V,Al)Ox and (Ti, V)Nx phases were (21.2, 250), (15.9, 208) GPa and (21.6, 249), (18.4, 206) GPa for 25 and 125 mm, respectively; which are significantly higher than that of the raw material (4.9, 210) GPa. The increase in hardness at higher SOD is due to higher nitriding by increasing the residence time of the particles as these interact with the carrier gas during their flight. TWAS is a technique with high potential for developing oxynitrided coatings with improved mechanical properties for various applications.
Spanish abstract:	El mecanismo de solidificaci�n y la reacci�n de las part�culas de Ti-6Al-4V en vuelo con la atm�sfera circundante y durante la formaci�n de los recubrimientos depositados mediante proyecci�n t�rmica por arco el�ctrico (TWAS) es complejo y no existen trabajos previos en la literatura. En este trabajo se estudia la microestructura, composici�n qu�mica y propiedades mec�nicas de las part�culas de Ti-6Al-4V en vuelo, fundidas y atomizadas por TWAS utilizando nitr�geno como gas portador. Las part�culas fueron colectadas en agua a dos distancias de rociado (SOD) (25 y 125 mm). Mediante DRX se identificaron las fases, y sus composiciones qu�micas se cuantificaron mediante an�lisis de WDS. Las propiedades mec�nicas (dureza, H, y m�dulo el�stico reducido, Er) se determinaron mediante nanoindentaci�n utilizando una punta de diamante esfero-c�nica. Las part�culas en vuelo muestran la presencia de fases a-Ti, b-Ti, TiN y TiO2. Mediante SEM se observ� una microestructura dendr�tica equiaxial y columnar en la superficie y en la secci�n transversal de las part�culas para ambas SOD, y se cuantificaron principalmente dos fases: (Ti,V,Al)Ox y (Ti,V)Nx correspondientes a las regiones dendr�ticas e interdendr�ticas, respectivamente. Los valores promedios (H, Er) en las fases (Ti,V,Al)Ox y (Ti, V)Nx fueron (21,2, 250), (15,9, 208) GPa y (21,6, 249), (18,4, 206) GPa para 25 y 125 mm, respectivamente; los cuales son significativamente superiores a los de la materia prima (4,9, 210) GPa. El aumento de dureza a mayor SOD se debe a una mayor nitruraci�n al aumentar el tiempo de permanencia de las part�culas al interactuar con el gas portador durante su vuelo. TWAS es una t�cnica con un alto potencial para el desarrollo de recubrimientos oxinitrurados con propiedades mec�nicas mejoradas para diversas aplicaciones.
