English title:	EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF A THERMOSETTING COATING OF POLYURETHANE RESIN AND GRAPHENE OXIDE ON PHYSICOCHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CEMENTITIOUS MATRICES
Spanish title:	EVALUCI�N DEL EFECTO DE UN RECUBRIMIENTO TERMOESTABLE DE RESINA DE POLIURETANO Y �XIDO DE GRAFENO SOBRE PROPIEDADES FISICOQU�MICAS Y MEC�NICAS DE MATRICES CEMENTICIAS
English abstract:	Concrete structures are structural elements made of cement, aggregates (sand, gravel, crushed stone), and admixtures. Among the best-known are reinforced concrete structures, which contain steel bars as reinforcement. As a consequence of the agents to which the structures are exposed, corrosion is generated in the concrete bars, which over time, causes fissures and cracks. The prevention of these signs of deterioration can be addressed through coatings, which according to their nature, provide new properties or improve the existing ones. The present research aims to evaluate the effect of a polyurethane resin and graphene oxide (PUOG) coating on a cementitious matrix's physicochemical and mechanical properties. The methodology used comprised two phases: the first consisted of establishing a protocol for applying the resin on the cementitious matrix by comparing three application methods. In the second stage, the influence of the coating on the interfacial adhesion and permeability properties of the matrix was estimated by means of sessile drop, pull-off, and degradation tests (by immersion in aggressive environments). The evaluation of each test was performed on cylindrical concrete coupons of 5.08 cm in diameter and 3.81 cm high, which were manually coated. This procedure was performed by depositing different amounts of coating as layers using a fully coated sponge. The contact angle tests for the coated concrete element showed that the use of PUOG resin gives a hydrophobic character to the system after 3 layers of coating, as for the measurements taken for the systems with two layers, a significant change was evidenced with respect to the system without layers, this last mentioned system absorbs the water drop in greater quantity and in less time, that is why the angle from which the drop falls is variable. The mechanical failure (obtained by pull-off tests) showed that the system initiates its breaking point or detachment inside the concrete coupon and not at the resin/concrete interface, which evidences the adhesion potential of the coating. The concrete/resin system was subjected to acidic environments to observe its effect on the deterioration time in which it was observed that the amount of material that detaches from the uncoated system when in contact with an acid solution for 30min and 1h is significant approximately 11 gr, the opposite case happens with the 2 and 3 layer systems, these two loose weight, although they do not exceed 4 gr per system. The applicability of polyurethane resin and graphene oxide on cementitious structures shows they have great potential to improve cementitious structures' chemical and mechanical properties.
Spanish abstract:	Las estructuras de concreto son elementos estructurales constituidos por cemento, agregados (arena, grava, piedra triturada) y aditivos, entre las m�s conocidas est�n las estructuras de concreto armado, las cuales contienen barras de acero como refuerzo. Como consecuencia de los agentes a los cuales se enfrentan las estructuras se genera corrosi�n en las barras de concreto, lo que con el tiempo provoca fisuras y grietas. La prevenci�n de estas se�ales de deterioro se puede abordar mediante el uso de recubrimientos, los cuales seg�n su naturaleza otorgan propiedades nuevas o mejoran las existentes. El presente trabajo de investigaci�n busca evaluar el efecto de un recubrimiento de resina de poliuretano y �xido de grafeno (PUOG) sobre las propiedades fisicoqu�micas y mec�nicas de una matriz cementicia. La metodolog�a utilizada comprendi� dos fases: la primera consisti� en establecer un protocolo para la aplicaci�n de la resina sobre la matriz cementicia, mediante la comparaci�n entre tres m�todos de aplicaci�n. En la segunda etapa se estim� la influencia del recubrimiento sobre las propiedades de adhesi�n interfacial y permeabilidad de la matriz, esto mediante pruebas de gota sessile, desprendimiento (pull-off) y degradaci�n (por inmersi�n en ambientes agresivos). La evaluaci�n de cada prueba se realiz� sobre cupones de concreto cil�ndricos de 5.08 cm de di�metro y 3.81 cm de alto, los cuales fueron recubiertos manualmente, este procedimiento se realiz� depositando diferentes cantidades de recubrimiento a modo de capas utilizando una esponja recubierta en su totalidad. Las pruebas de �ngulo de contacto para el elemento de concreto recubierto evidenci� que el uso de la resina PUOG concede un car�cter hidrof�bico al sistema luego de 3 capas de recubrimiento, en cuanto a las medidas tomadas para los sistemas con dos capas, se evidenci� un cambio significativo con respeto al sistema sin capas, este ultimo sistema mencionado absorbe en mayor cantidad la gota de agua y en menor tiempo, es por esto que el �ngulo desde que cae la gota es variable. La falla mec�nica, (obtenida mediante pruebas de pull-off demostr� que el sistema inicia su punto de quiebre o desprendimiento dentro del cup�n de concreto y no en la interfase resina/concreto, lo cual evidencia el potencial de la adhesi�n del recubrimiento. El sistema concreto/resina se someti� a ambientes �cidos para observar su efecto en el tiempo de deterioro en el cual se observ� la cantidad de material que se desprende del sistema sin recubrir al estar en contacto con una soluci�n �cida durante 30min y 1h es significativa aproximadamente 11 gr, caso contrario sucede con los sistemas de 2 y 3 capas, estos dos pierden peso, aunque no sobre pasan de 4 gr por sistema. La aplicabilidad de la resina de poliuretano y �xido de grafeno sobre estructuras cementicias demuestra que tienen un gran potencial para mejorar las propiedades qu�micas y mec�nicas de las estructuras de cemento.
