English title:	EXPERIMENTAL THERMAL FATIGUE ANALYSIS OF 316L STAINLESS STEEL FOR APPLICATION IN HIGH TEMPERATURE CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER (CSP) PLANTS
Spanish title:	AN�LISIS EXPERIMENTAL DE FATIGA T�RMICA DEL ACERO INOXIDABLE 316L PARA APLICACI�N EN PLANTAS DE ENERG�A SOLAR CONCENTRADA DE ALTA TEMPERATURA
English abstract:	Renewable energies contribute to the reduction the greenhouse gases, showing as an important solution in the energy transition. In this context, central tower Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) systems are a promising alternative technology. Currently, two-phase sodium thermosiphons are being studied, aiming their use in the central receiver of a solar power tower due to their high performance as heat exchangers at high temperatures. Sodium is the working fluid of the thermosiphon, so it is important to avoid cracks in its structure. The 316L stainless steel is a material that can be used in the structure of the thermosiphon. An experimental analysis of thermal fatigue of 316L steel was carried out in order to evaluate the possible changes in the 316L steel microstructure when it is submitted to the repetitive temperature changes that occur at the central receiver due to the variable solar radiation throughout the day. An induction furnace was built to thermal fatigue 316L stainless steel samples. The induction furnace allowed that the temperature of steel samples to be quickly raised to 700 �C. Subsequently, the samples were cooled in the environment up to 500 �C. These heating and cooling processes were successively repeated for 500 cycles. Hardness and metallographic tests were performed on a 316L stainless steel sample without thermal fatigue and on three 316L stainless steel samples thermally fatigued. The results of hardness and microstructure were compared and significant changes were not observed. It is suggested further studies of thermal fatigue with a range of higher temperatures and a greater number of cycles.
Spanish abstract:	Las energ�as renovables contribuyen a la reducci�n de los gases de efecto invernadero, mostr�ndose como una importante soluci�n para la transici�n energ�tica. En este contexto, las plantas de energ�a solar concentrada (CSP) de torre central se presentan como una alternativa tecnol�gica prometedora. Actualmente, los termosifones bif�sicos de sodio est�n siendo estudiados, visando su utilizaci�n en el receptor central de la torre solar debido a su alto desempe�o como intercambiadores de calor a altas temperaturas. El sodio es el fluido de trabajo del termosif�n, por lo que es importante evitar fisuras en la estructura del mismo. El acero inoxidable 316L es un material que puede ser utilizado en la estructura del termosif�n. Un an�lisis experimental de fatiga t�rmica del acero 316L fue realizado con el fin de evaluar los posibles cambios en la microestructura del acero 316L cuando es sometido a los cambios repetitivos de temperatura que se presentan en el receptor central debido a las variaciones de la radiaci�n solar a lo largo del d�a. Se construy� un horno de inducci�n para producir la fatiga t�rmica en muestras de acero inoxidable 316L. El horno de inducci�n permiti� que la temperatura de las muestras de acero se elevara r�pidamente a 700 �C. Posteriormente, las muestras fueron enfriadas en condiciones ambientales hasta 500 �C. Estos procesos de calentamiento y enfriamiento se repitieron sucesivamente durante 500 ciclos. Se realizaron ensayos de dureza y metalograf�a en una muestra de acero inoxidable 316L sin fatiga t�rmica y en tres muestras de acero inoxidable 316L fatigadas t�rmicamente. Se compararon los resultados de dureza y microestructura y no se observaron cambios significativos. Se sugieren estudios adicionales de fatiga t�rmica, utilizando un intervalo de temperaturas m�s altas y con mayor n�mero de ciclos.
