Santiago de Querétaro

Santiago de Querétaro Cty is located northwest of Mexico City at an altitude of 1800 meters on a plateau delimited north and south by two lines of hills; the broad agricultural plain of the Bajio stretches out very close by. Seven kilometers from the urban center is an archaeological site dating back to the Teotihuacan period (400-600) and the Toltec period (650-1050).

The native district, in the east, and the Spanish district, in the west, are separated by a hill. The orientation of the chapel (La Cruz) built at the top of the hill as early as the 16th century was used as a reference for the more regular urban layout of the colonial district; this hill, which is now the site of a Franciscan monastery, and the Plaza de Armas are the main features of the urban framework. In the east part of the city, a magnificent aqueduct (1735) with its 74 arcades stretches for more than one kilometer.

The many churches, monasteries, palaces, houses, and fountains comprise a mainly Baroque architectural landscape; the style is expressed even more freely inside these buildings, as evidenced by the de Santa Clara and the de Santa Rosa monasteries with their Plateresque and Churrigueresque elements and by numerous enlarged or renovated monuments. In addition to the Baroque work, neoclassical monuments or elements (at the end of the 18th century) can also be found.

Since 1996, the Historic Center of Santiago de Queretaro city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the beauty of its well-preserved colonial heritage and the historical value of its buildings; the property covers 4 square kilometers with 203 blocks. There are 1400 designated monuments, of which twenty are religious, and fifteen are used for public services. The many non-religious buildings in Querétaro, again mostly Baroque, are not innovative or exceptional in the plan; the special significance lies in the design and construction of a wide range of multilobate arches, to be found only in the interiors of the houses and palaces, which give the Baroque architecture of Santiago de Querétaro city an exceptional and original character, which is enhanced by the "pink stone", eagerly sought and used in other parts of the region. Today, it continues to be a lively historic urban center.
