English title:	Chromium removal potential of tannery chromium from filtration in diatomaceous multi-source soils
Spanish title:	Potencial de remoci�n de cromo de curtiembre producto de la filtraci�n en suelos diatom�ceos multiorigen
English abstract:	Many industrial processes generate undesirable by-products due to their pollutant load and associated harmful effects; one example is the tanneries, from which it has been identified that the main pollutant residues suspended in the water used for the treatment and obtaining of leather, correspond mainly to heavy metal ions such as hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) and trivalent chromium. Tanning is the transformation of the skin of cattle or other animals into leather through the use of tannins or chrome salts; diatomaceous earth or diatomite comes from the fossil remains of tiny plantonic algae called diatoms, which are found in all the waters of the earth. They have a strong ion exchange capacity, large interfacial area, high porosity, and high adsorption, which enables them to adsorb pollutant molecules such as dyes and heavy metals; the adsorption capacity is strongly related to the negative charge resulting from the hydroxyl groups of Silica; the high porosity of diatomite (80% to 90% voids), makes it a material used in different industries as a filtration medium or as an adsorbent. The present study analyzed the removal potential of trivalent chromium present in the industrial wastewater from tanneries in the city of Bogot�, Colombia; for this purpose, diatomaceous soil layers of two origins, North American multispecies and Colombian monospecies, were applied, which were implemented with thermal activation and without thermal activation for their subsequent application. The filter medium through which the contaminated liquid was made to flow consisted of diatomaceous soil layers of varying thicknesses between 1 cm and 7 cm. The process involved the application of a regulated downward flow pressure inside a specially designed chamber. The research was carried out with chromium-contaminated wastewater from one of the leather production plants in the city of Bogot�, Colombia; from the results obtained in the research, it can be generally concluded that for the Colombian species, the positive effect on the removal of trivalent chromium, as a result of thermal activation, is evident. While the American species do not show typical behavior. In relation to the size of the filter layer, it is evident in the Colombian species that, as the size of the filter increases, greater removal of the pollutant is reported, provided that the soil has been activated; when the soils (Colombian or American) are not activated, the removal potential is uneven due to thickness. The best removal potential (52.54%) was found for the Colombian species, thermally activated and at a thickness of 7 cm. the lowest result (13.28%) was related to the Colombian species at a thickness of 1 cm, also with thermal activation. However, it is worth mentioning that regardless of the activation condition of the material or the thickness of the filter material, the percentage of chromium removal was always recorded for both species of diatoms.
Spanish abstract:	M�ltiples procesos industriales generan subproductos indeseables por su carga contaminante y por los efectos nocivos asociados; un ejemplo son las curtiembres, de las cuales se ha identificado que los principales residuos contaminantes suspendidos en el agua utilizada para el tratamiento y obtenci�n del cuero, corresponden principalmente a iones de metales pesados como el cromo hexavalente y cromo trivalente. Se denomina curtido, a la transformaci�n de la piel del ganado vacuno u otros animales en cuero, mediante el uso de taninos o sales cromadas. Las llamadas tierras de Diatomeas o diatomitas provienen de los restos f�siles de peque�as algas plant�nicas llamadas diatomeas, las cuales se encuentran en todas las aguas de la tierra. Estas tienen una fuerte capacidad de intercambio i�nico, gran �rea interfacial, alta porosidad y una gran adsorci�n, lo que las faculta para adsorber mol�culas contaminantes como tintes y metales pesados. La capacidad de adsorci�n est� fuertemente relacionada con la carga negativa resultante de los grupos hidroxilos de la S�lice; la alta porosidad de las Diatomitas (80 a 90% de vac�os), hace que sea un material utilizado en diferentes industrias como medio de filtraci�n o como absorbente El presente estudio analiz� el potencial de remoci�n del cromo trivalente presente en aguas residuales de uso industrial, provenientes de curtiembres de la ciudad de Bogot�, Colombia; para estos efectos se aplicaron capas de suelos diatom�ceos de dos or�genes, Norteamericano multiespecie y colombiano monoespecie; los cuales fueron implementados con activaci�n t�rmica y sin activaci�n t�rmica para su posterior aplicaci�n. El medio filtrante a trav�s del cual se hizo fluir el l�quido contaminado, consisti� en capas de suelo diatom�ceo de espesor variable entre 1 cm a 7 cm. El proceso consider� la aplicaci�n de una presi�n regulada de flujo descendente, dentro de una c�mara especialmente dise�ada para estos fines. La investigaci�n se desarroll� con aguas residuales contaminadas de cromo tomada de una de las plantas de producci�n de pieles de la ciudad de Bogot�, Colombia; a partir de los resultados obtenidos en la investigaci�n se puede concluir de forma general que para la especie colombiana es evidente el efecto positivo en la remoci�n de cromo trivalente, producto de la activaci�n t�rmica. Mientras que la especie americana no presenta un comportamiento regular. En relaci�n con el tama�o de la capa filtrante, resulta evidente en la especie colombiana que, al aumentar la dimensi�n del filtro, se reporta una mayor remoci�n del contaminante, siempre que el suelo haya sido activado; cuando los suelos (colombiano o americano) no son activados, resulta irregular el potencial de remoci�n en funci�n del espesor. El mejor desempe�o de remoci�n (52,54%) se present� en la especie colombiana, activada t�rmicamente y en espesor de 7 cm; el resultado m�s bajo (13,28%) se relaciono con la especie colombiana en espesor de 1 cm, tambi�n con activaci�n t�rmica. Sin embargo, cabe mencionar que independientemente de la condici�n de activaci�n del material o el espesor del material filtrante siempre se registr� porcentaje de remoci�n de cromo en ambas especies de diatomeas.
