English title:	Research and educational contributions at the University of the Republic
Spanish title:	Investigaci�n y contribuciones educativas en la Universidad de la Rep�blica
English abstract:	The university functions considered substantive for the University of the Republic of Uruguay are divided into teaching, research, and extension. Thus, our performance as teachers and researchers goes through these three pillars. In this presentation, I collect the main lines of action I work at the Udelar, which can contribute to the Materials Science, Engineering, and Nanotechnology Researchers Network. In terms of research, two large areas of action stand out: one that corresponds to new methodologies of teaching and learning of sciences, with a focus on the formation of interdisciplinary teams for the resolution of complex problems that society demands, and a second area of work that involves the study of natural materials, which can be an inspiration for the development of new materials, mainly through surface modification at the micro and nanoscale. These modifications provide new physicochemical properties to the material, such as superhydrophobicity, electrical conductivity, and optics, among others. Regarding education, the work is at the undergraduate and graduate levels on applying new teaching methodologies to better understand the phenomena linked to basic and natural sciences. Likewise, university, primary, and secondary school teachers are trained to apply these methodologies in their classrooms. Finally, in extension, the work is on mentoring at Science Club fairs, scientific dissemination through the academic coordination of a postgraduate degree in Science and Technology Communication, collaboration with science museums in the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology experiences and in the design of scientific activities to be carried out in schools and high schools.
Spanish abstract:	Las funciones universitarias consideradas como sustantivas para la Universidad de la Rep�blica de Uruguay se dividen en: ense�anza, investigaci�n y extensi�n. Es as� que, nuestro desempe�o como docentes e investigadores transita por estos tres pilares. En la presente exposici�n, recojo las principales l�neas de actuaci�n en que me desempe�o en la Udelar y que pueden aportar a la Red de Investigadores en Ciencia de Materiales, Ingenier�a y Nanotecnolog�a. En t�rminos de investigaci�n, se destacan dos grandes �reas de actuaci�n: una que corresponde a nuevas metodolog�as de ense�anza y aprendizaje de las ciencias, con un enfoque en la conformaci�n de equipos interdisciplinarios para la resoluci�n de problemas complejos que demanda la sociedad, y una segunda �rea de trabajo que implica el estudio de materiales naturales, que pueden ser de inspiraci�n para el desarrollo de nuevos materiales, principalmente, a trav�s de la modificaci�n de superficie a nivel micro y nano escala. Estas modificaciones proporcionan propiedades fisicoqu�micas nuevas al material como superhidrofobicidad, conductividad el�ctrica, �ptica, entre otras. En cuanto a educaci�n, se trabaja a nivel de grado y posgrado en la aplicaci�n de nuevas metodolog�as de ense�anza para una mejor comprensi�n de los fen�menos vinculados a las ciencias b�sicas y naturales. Asimismo, se capacita a docentes universitarios, de ense�anza primaria y secundaria a aplicar estas metodolog�as en sus aulas. Finalmente, en extensi�n se trabaja en el acompa�amiento como mentores en las ferias de Clubes de Ciencia, se trabaja en divulgaci�n cient�fica a trav�s de la coordinaci�n acad�mica de un posgrado en Comunicaci�n de la Ciencia y la Tecnolog�a, se colabora con museos de ciencia en el desarrollo de experiencias de nanociencia y nanotecnolog�a y en el dise�o de actividades cient�ficas para realizar en escuelas y liceos.
