English title:	Carbon nanostructures: synthesis, characterization and applications

English abstract:	Semiconductor nanocrystal technology began in the early 1980s with the work of Louis Brus at Bell Laboratories and by Alexander Efros and Alexei Ekimov of the Loffe Institute in Saint Petersburg. In recent years it has become one of the most important and exciting cutting-edge fields in physics, chemistry, engineering, and biology. In the search for new nanomaterials, a good part of the research is carried out around carbon, since its forms of hybridization generate different allotropes with very well-defined electronic, mechanical, and physicochemical properties. There are two concepts associated with the synthesis of nanoparticles. The first of these is the term top-down, which encompasses all the methods that seek to miniaturize matter, starting with macroscopic materials and reducing their size to nanometers, and this change leads to the material presenting new properties. The second concept is found in the term bottom-up, which encompasses the methods that seek growth atom by atom until reaching a material of nanometric dimensions. The different methods reported to obtain fluorescent carbon nanostructure are classified into one of these two routes, depending on the precursor material and some of them are: hydrothermal synthesis, electrochemical methods, microwave, pyrolysis, laser ablation, etc. In this sense, the Laboratorio de Espectroscop�a At�mica y Molecular (LEAM) is attached to the Universidad Industrial de Santander and located in the Parque Tecnol�gico Guatiguar�, Piedecuesta, Santander, Colombia, has implemented different methods of synthesis of carbon nanostructures that have been analyzed to date through characterization techniques such as absorption spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, steady-state fluorescence, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance, and Raman spectroscopy.
Spanish abstract:	La tecnolog�a de nanocristales semiconductores inicia a principios de los a�os 80 con los trabajos de Louis Brus en los laboratorios Bell y por Alexander Efros y Alexei Ekimov del Instituto Loffe en San Petersburgo, Rusia. En los �ltimos a�os se ha convertido en uno de los m�s importantes y excitantes campos de vanguardia en f�sica, qu�mica, ingenier�a y biolog�a; en la b�squeda de nuevos nanomateriales, una buena parte de las investigaciones se desarrollan en torno al carbono ya que sus formas de hibridaci�n generan diferentes al�tropos con propiedades electr�nicas, mec�nicas y fisicoqu�micas muy definidas. Existen dos conceptos asociados a la s�ntesis de nanopart�culas. El primero de ellos es el t�rmino top-down, que abarca todos los m�todos que buscan la miniaturizaci�n de la materia, iniciando con materiales macrosc�picos y reduciendo su tama�o a nan�metros, y ese cambio conlleva a que el material presente nuevas propiedades. El segundo concepto se encuentra en el t�rmino bottom-up, que abarca los m�todos que buscan el crecimiento �tomo a �tomo, hasta llegar a tener un material de dimensiones nanom�tricas. Los distintos m�todos reportados para obtener nanopuntos fluorescentes de carbono se clasifican en alguna de estas dos rutas, dependiendo del material precursor y algunos de ellos son: s�ntesis hidrot�rmica, m�todos electroqu�micos, por microondas, pir�lisis, ablaci�n l�ser, etc. En este sentido, el Laboratorio de Espectroscop�a At�mica y Molecular (LEAM) est� adscrito a la Universidad Industrial de Santander y ubicado en el Parque Tecnol�gico Guatiguar�, Piedecuesta, Santander, Colombia, ha implementado diferentes m�todos de s�ntesis de nanoestructuras de carbono que se han analizado hasta la fecha a trav�s de t�cnicas de caracterizaci�n como espectroscop�a de absorci�n, espectroscopia ultravioleta-visible, fluorescencia en r�gimen estacionario, dispersi�n din�mica de luz, espectroscopia infrarroja por transformada de Fourier con reflectancia total atenuada, y espectroscopia Raman.
