English title:	Experimental capabilities of Mexico's National Thermal Spraying Laboratory
Spanish title:	Capacidades experimentales del Laboratorio Nacional de Proyecci�n T�rmica de M�xico
English abstract:	The "Laboratorio Nacional de Proyecci�n T�rmica de M�xico (CENAPROT)" based at "Centro de Investigaci�n y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Polit�cnico Nacional (Cinvestav)" and in collaboration with the "Centro de Tecnolog�a Avanzada (CIATEQ)" and the "Centro de Ingenier�a y Desarrollo Industrial (CIDESI)" develops projects related to materials science and surface engineering around thermal spraying. CENAPROT fulfills three scientific, academic, and technological objectives with scientific research activities, training of specialized human resources, and technological linkage with national and international institutions. The laboratory's work is related to the synthesis, processing, and characterization of bulk materials and coatings with a special focus on the interaction between their structure, processing, microstructure, and properties. At Cinvestav, the research group concentrates on the development of "Advanced Ceramics" and 3 lines of research are addressed: (i) multifunctional ceramics, (ii) bioceramics, and (iii) metals and alloys for aeronautics applications. The specific projects per research line are: (i) the study of new bismuth-based ceramics for applications in environmental remediation, adsorbents, (photocatalytic), biosensors, and alternative energies based on ceramic fuel cells, or piezoelectric energy harvesters. (iii) Third-generation bioceramics based on calcium silico-phosphates (bio-hydroxyapatite obtained from bovine bone, bioactive glass, and bismuth-based piezoelectrics with excellent properties for tissue regeneration and natural bone functions. (iii) Development of thermal barrier coatings (ceramics and metals (intermetallics and superalloys) by cold spray, twin wire arc spray, high-velocity oxy-fuel, and air plasma spraying processes. The effect of ashes from active Mexican volcanoes (Popocatepetl and Colima) on the thermal barrier coatings of aeronautical turbine blades is also being studied. Metal matrix composite coatings, hard-facing, etc., are also being developed. CENAPROT's infrastructure capabilities are among the most complete with thermal spraying processes for the deposition of coatings of all types, structural, microstructural, chemical, and various physical (electrical, thermal, mechanical, optical, etc.) and biological (acellular and cellular in-vitro tests) characterization laboratories. CENAPROT is open to collaborations of all kinds to continue being the national and international reference in materials science and engineering with a special emphasis on thermal spraying coatings and advanced ceramics for different applications.
Spanish abstract:	El Laboratorio Nacional de Proyecci�n T�rmica de M�xico (CENAPROT) con sede en el Centro de Investigaci�n y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Polit�cnico Nacional (Cinvestav) y en colaboraci�n con el Centro de Tecnolog�a Avanzada (CIATEQ) y el Centro de Ingenier�a y Desarrollo Industrial (CIDESI) desarrolla proyectos relacionados con la ciencia de materiales y la ingenier�a de superficies en torno a la proyecci�n t�rmica. El CENAPROT cumple con tres objetivos cient�fico, acad�mico y tecnol�gico con actividades de investigaci�n cient�fica, formaci�n de recursos humanos especializados y vinculaci�n tecnol�gica con instituciones nacionales e internacionales. Los trabajos del laboratorio est�n relacionados con la s�ntesis, procesamiento y caracterizaci�n de materiales en volumen y recubrimientos con especial enfoque en la interacci�n entre su estructura, procesamiento, microestructura y propiedades. En Cinvestav, el grupo de investigaci�n se concentra en el desarrollo de �Cer�micos Avanzados� y se atienden 3 l�neas de investigaci�n: (i) cer�micos multifuncionales, (ii) biocer�micos, y (iii) Metales y aleaciones para aplicaciones en aeron�utica. Los proyectos espec�ficos por l�nea de investigaci�n son: (i) el estudio de nuevos cer�micos base bismuto para aplicaciones en remediaci�n ambiental, adsorbentes, (fotocatal�ticos), biosensores, energ�as alternativas basadas en celdas de combustible cer�micas o recolectores de energ�a piezoel�ctricos. (ii) Biocer�micos de tercera generaci�n basados en silico-fosfatos de calcio (biohidroxiapatita obtenida de hueso de bovino, vidrio bioactivo y piezoel�ctricos base bismuto con excelentes propiedades para la regeneraci�n de tejido y funciones naturales del hueso. (iii) Desarrollo de recubrimientos barreras t�rmicas (cer�micos y metales) por procesos proyecci�n t�rmica de oxicombustible de alta velocidad de alta velocidad y proyecci�n t�rmica por plasma atmosf�rico. Tambi�n se estudia el efecto de cenizas de volcanes mexicanos activos (Popocatepetl y Colima) sobre los recubrimientos barrera t�rmica de �labes de turbinas aeron�uticas. Tambi�n se desarrollan recubrimientos compuestos de matriz met�lica, de "hard-facing", entre otros. Las capacidades de infraestructura del CENAPROT son de las m�s completas con procesos de proyecci�n t�rmica para el dep�sito de recubrimientos de todo tipo, laboratorios de caracterizaci�n estructural, microestructural, qu�mico y de varias propiedades f�sicas (el�ctricas, t�rmicas, mec�nicas, �pticas, etc) y biol�gicas (pruebas in-vitro acelulares y celulares). En conclusi�n, el CENAPROT est� abierto a colaboraciones de todo tipo para seguir siendo el referente a nivel nacional e internacional en temas de ciencia e ingenier�a de materiales con especial �nfasis en recubrimientos por proyecci�n t�rmica y cer�micos avanzados para diferentes aplicaciones.
